Wine in Croatia

Croatia is located in Southeast Europe along the eastern Adriatic Sea, bordered by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Viticulture in Croatia is shaped by strong geographic contrasts between the Adriatic coast, inland plains, and hilly continental regions, resulting in a wide range of wine styles.

Croatian wine regions are commonly grouped into four main zones. Istria and Kvarner in the northwest produce fresh whites and structured reds under strong maritime influence. Dalmatia, stretching along the Adriatic coast and islands, is known for warm conditions and powerful red wines. Slavonia and the Croatian Danub region in the east benefit from continental climates and fertile plains, supporting both white and red production. Central and Northwestern Croatia combines hills and river valleys with cooler conditions and smaller-scale vineyards.

Croatia is particularly notable for its indigenous grape varieties, including Plavac Mali, Malvazija Istarska, Grasevina, Posip, and Tera, alongside international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Wines are predominantly dry, with styles ranging from crisp coastal whites to robust Dalmatian reds.
