Moldova is located in eastern Europe between Romania and Ukraine. The country lies on the same latitude as many of Europe's major wine regions and has a long tradition of viticulture dating back more than 2,000 years. Wine production has played an important role in Moldovan agriculture and culture, and today the country remains one of the largest wine producers in Eastern Europe.
The climate is predominantly continental, with warm summers and mild winters. Vineyards are planted on rolling hills and river valleys where soils of limestone, clay, and sand support a wide range of grape varieties. Many vineyards benefit from the moderating influence of the Black Sea, which lies to the south.
Moldova uses a classification system aligned with European PDO and PGI regulations.
