Switzerland - Country Overview (Wine Context)

  • Location: Central Europe, bordered by France, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Italy.
  • Capital: Bern.
  • Area: 41,285 square kilometres (15,940 square miles).
  • Population (2025 est.): About 9.0 million people.

Wine and Viticulture Statistics

  • Wine climate: Continental climate with strong alpine influence, moderated by lakes and river valleys.
  • Main wine regions: Valais, Vaud, Geneva, Three Lakes, Ticino, and German- speaking cantons such as Zurich and Schaffhausen.
  • Vineyard area: Approximately 14,500 to 15,000 hectares.
  • Main grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chasselas, Gamay, Merlot, Petite Arvine.
  • Wine styles: Dry white wines, Pinot Noir reds, Merlot-based wines in Ticino, rose wines, and limited sparkling production.
  • Industry notes: Swiss wine production is largely consumed domestically, with limited export volumes despite high quality and regional diversity.

Language Regions

Switzerland is divided into three main language regions. French Romandie Region, German Region and the Italian Ticino Region.

The Romandie region is made up out of the Cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Valais, Freiburg, Neuchatel, Jura and the Lake of Biel in the canton of Bern.

The German region comprises the Cantons of Basel-Country Basel-Stadt, Solothurn, Aargau, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St Gallen, Glarus, Zurich, Schwyz, Zug, Lucerne, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Appenzell Outer Rhodes and Appenzell Inner Rhodes internal Uri, Grisons and Bern with the exception of the Lake of Bienne.
