Wine in Belarus

Belarus is located in Eastern Europe, bordered by Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, and Ukraine. Due to its cool continental climate and relatively short growing season, traditional grape viticulture has been limited. Wine production in Belarus has therefore developed differently from that of southern European countries.

Historically, alcoholic beverages in Belarus were based more on fruit, honey, and grain than on grapes. Modern wine production relies largely on cold-hardy grape varieties and hybrid cultivars suited to northern climates, as well as on fruit wines made from apples, berries, and cherries. Small experimental vineyards have expanded in recent decades, particularly in southern regions where conditions are slightly milder.

Most wines produced are for domestic consumption and include dry and semi-sweet styles. Grape wine production remains small-scale, with a stronger presence of fruit-based wines within the broader national wine category.
