Wine in Austria

Austria is located in Central Europe, bordered by Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Viticulture is concentrated mainly in the eastern part of the country, where continental and Pannonian influences provide warmer conditions and longer growing seasons.

Austria's wine regions are organized into several distinct areas. Lower Austria (Niederosterreich) includes Weinviertel, Kamptal, Kremstal, Wachau, Traisental, and Wagram, forming the core of Austrian wine production. Vienna is notable for vineyards within the city limits. Burgenland is known for both dry reds and sweet wines, while Styria (Steiermark), including Sudsteiermark, Weststeiermark, and Sudoststeiermark, produces aromatic wines in cooler hillside vineyards.

Austria is particularly associated with indigenous grape varieties such as Gruner Veltliner, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent, alongside Riesling and other international varieties. Wines are predominantly dry, with notable styles ranging from crisp whites to structured reds and renowned dessert wines from Neusiedlersee.
